If poker was meant to be played on machines, cards wouldn't have been invented. Comparing online poker to real poker is like comparing night to day.
Playing online poker is the night, as you can see anything except what a program or machines deems you can. You have no idea who you are playing, if they are drunk, if the game is honest? Or a dozen other things. On the honest part, if this question can't be believed at the present time, some people should do some homework on what's happening in the world of online poker.
Cheating is rampant and the winners of the biggest events on Pokerstars and Full Tilt were disqualified for allegedly cheating, though not much more information is furnished.
In a real casino, at least you'd have recourse in a court, but not so online. Then you have the Absolute/Ultimate bet online site scandal, where employees are accused and have been outted to cheating high stakes players by seeing their hole cards from the back room, then the information relayed to the persons playing.

As for real casinos/cardrooms, cheating goes on there also, but not to the degree you can find online. At least in a casons/cardrooms, you can see things as they occur and this gives people who are watching and who know what to look for a certain advantage against being cheated. In both venues, if collusion is involved and the players good, you can flush your money down the toilet and nothing will be proved.
When it comes down to real poker, the only way to play is in a casino/cardroom. I'm also against card shuffling machines, as I do believe if given a machine, someone will figure out a way to beat it, no matter what I'm told.
When the sums of money as large as those in poker are involved, people will do just about anything to get it. Besides, there is basically no punishment if you're caught.
All one needs to do is see how many people are in jail for cheating in casino's, then look and see how many people are in jail for cheating poker at high levels. When you find a poker cheat from the high levels in jail, please let me know.
